Though erectile dysfunction (ED) can be embarrassing for a man, there are many treatment options available. One very effective dysfunction treatment is oral medication. Selective enzyme inhibitors  have been quite successful. Available by prescription only, their use should always be supervised by a doctor. They should not be combined with certain other medications, such as nitrates or alpha-blockers. Always advise your physician of any side effects. When taken as directed, these drugs have shown very quick and consistent results.

Another option for erectile dysfunction is self-injection into the side of the penis, with a prostaglandin. This has proven to be effective for 80% of men who have tried this method.

Urethral suppositories, which also contain a prostaglandin, are another dysfunction treatment for ED. The suppository is inserted into the urethra, and has been shown to improve erections in 60% of those who use it.

Vacuum devices are also helpful in achieving an erection. Using a hand pump, a vacuum is created which draws blood into the penis. When a suitable erection is achieved, a rubber O-ring is then placed around the penis base, to maintain the erection. These devices tend to be most appropriate for those who can achieve partial erections on their own. Vacuum devices do require a prescription, and the price range is between three hundred to five hundred dollars. They should not be used by men with blood clotting problems, or by those who take blood thinners.

Surgical procedures may also be used in treating erectile dysfunction. Penile implants or an inflatable penile prosthesis can be inserted to improve rigidity. Vascular reconstructive surgery may improve blood circulation to the penis. Venous ligation may also be used to bind or remove leaky veins, resulting in greater blood flow to the penis. These surgeries are rare, and can result in nerve damage or scar tissue, which can also cause impotence.

Good nutrition and supplements can contribute to sexual health. Certain herbs may be beneficial as well, but should be used with guidance, as serious side effects can occur, when used indiscriminately. Exercise helps in promoting energy and vascular health. In many cases, psychological factors are involved, and a therapist may be helpful.

Dysfunction treatment is now widely available, so in order to find a valid treatment option, have an evaluation by your doctor.
